Map Name: Earth Base
Author: Mikko Sandt
Released: 24th December 2004
Rating: 95

Review by Kim Robinson on 12th August 2007

Mikko's latest contribution to the Duke community, Earth Base is right up there with the best of them - this particular level making full use of JonoF's port, weighing in at around 1700 sectors. Because of this you will need the port to play the level (included in the archive), a small price to pay for you DOS users out there. Frankly, the map is magnificent - well designed, shaded, gameplay and fun-factor not lacking - Mikko knows what makes a Duke level work. The atmosphere is rich, helped a lot by the great skybox but the ongoing storyline helps as well. Playing time is around fifteen minutes, and given the smooth gameplay means there's quite a lot to see. Grab your copy today!

Note: "Earth Base" requires the latest Jonof's Port to run. The level has nearly 1700
sectors.
The original Build supports only 1024. And the level has a strong skybox - half of
the atmosphere
is lost without it. THE NEW JONOF'S PORT COMES WITH THE LEVEL (CHECK BOTH JONOF
ZIPS)!

Installation: Unzip EarthBase.zip to your Jonof Duke3D directory. Skybox files should
go to
models/skybox directory. Duke3d.def file should go to your Jonof Duke3D directory. If
you don't
wish to overwrite your duke3d.def file then just open the new one (that comes with
this map),
copy the text and paste it in your own duke3d.def file - then save. Tiles014.art also
has to
be copied into your duke3d directory. Launch Jonof and select EBase from the menu.

Description: I got the inspiration from a cartoon/film "Ice Age". While watching the
film I just
started taking notes and wrote down all the things I could think of. I wanted to make
a whole
episode of ice age levels but realized that it'll never happen. The original idea was
to
make two versions of the level - one with snow and one without. But that idea was
soon dropped.
The construction phase went well until I had built 1024 sectors - at that point I had
to wait
for a Jonof version which would kill the original sector limit. About a month ago
that happened
and now "Earth Base" is finally here.

Story: Two thousand years from now - The Earth is a big frozen ball - covered with
ice. The new Ice Age
came early this time and mankind vanished from the face of the Earth. The mankind
abandoned the
Earth and headed toward new planets. The aliens however - had adapted to this new
environment quickly.
They saw Ice Age as an opportunity to spread their spore across the galaxy. They use
the Earth base
as a head-quarters for long-distance attacks.

There has been rumours that the aliens have now located mankind's new home planet.
The only way to
stop them from invading our new home is to use a pre-emptive strike against our old
home planet which
has now become their stronghold. The Earth base is too strong - the only way to
remove this threat is
to infiltrate into our old planet by using the abandoned EDF base near the Canadian
border (in the
state of Idaho).

The old EDF base is out of electricity due to the fact that no one has been there for
two thousand
years (except the aliens but they haven't had any use for it). Your mission is to
first turn on the
electricity and then send a satellite transmission to our homeplanet. After that -
escape. The aliens will
become even more aware of your presence once the message has been sent since they
monitor all satellite
uplink systems.
