Map Name: Rural Nightmare
Author: Aymeric Nocus (MRCK)
Released: 24th October 2004
Rating: 94

Review by Kim Robinson on 2nd August 2007

Yet another quality level from the maker of some other reasonably high-scoring levels, Rural Nightmare may be ethereally dreamlike for your average chicken farmer but for your slick urban-dweller, the lack of modern conveniences like high-powered alien defense systems is enough to induce a bout of brown trousers. The map is scary, much in the same vein as Red3 and the DarkPlace series but with it's own, Aymeric style we've all come to know and love. Gameplay rocks, it's innovative and there's some great firefights - despite the alarmingly low number of baddies. Detail is simply superbe. BUILD has once again been stretched pretty much to its limits and the result is another well-conceived, well-made level which was more than worth the 3 month wait. Take a gander. Now!

Description : Dammit. It was supposed to be a two-week side project - and
it took me
almost three months, the longest time a map ever took me to build.
I think it's a good map, maybe a bit short. It was heavily influenced
by levels like Red 3 (by Merlijn van Oostrum) or the DP series (by
Taivo Maripuu). If you're not scared at least once when playing this
level at least for the first time then... then something.

OK so this one takes place in a (very) dark village (well there are
some bright lights, but its still very dark - better play it at night).
There are a lot of small houses, some inside places (firestation etc.)
and a skatepark :P I used a *LOT* of ambience sounds everywhere and it
gives the map a cool atmosphere.

Basically here's the storyline - a meteorite crashed in the southern
village (altho you cant see it - thanx to the wall limit :P) and aliens
took over the northern village. The few inhabitants who survived
started to build walls all around the place to prevent the aliens from
coming in but they didnt have enough time and the aliens did manage to
come in :P You wake up in your bedroom after a bad dream and thats
where the level starts. Find your way to the village and kick some
			  alien asses :P

The level is big and detailed, altho linear. It has a lot of spooky
stuff, sound sequences and scripted sequences designed to scare the
shit out of you :) Oh and yeah for those who care I was inspired by a
real-world location (altho the map isnt litterally 'based on' it), a
village named Lambesc in the south of France where I spent my latest
summer holidays :) The house where you start is a perfect replica of
the one I lived three weeks in tho :P (I even drew plans of it on
			  paper lol)

Additional Credits to : Merlijn 'Mrline' van Oostrum (Red series, betatest, AMC
review)
Pascal Rouaud (I used some stuff from the Roch maps like 3D chairs)
Taivo Maripuu (betatest, made some great maps)
Ryan 'Quakis' Rouse (betatest, gave me the picture idea - you'll see)
BlitZ (betatest, opinion on the level)
Fernando Marquèz and Brother Ed (wanting to betatest :P)
Kim Robinson aka the Repository Bloke - without his support since the
beginning, this map would never have seen the light of the day :P
Brett Gmoser, Jonah Bishop, Steffen Itterheim, Klaus Breuer
			  David Franjau
A lot of people I forgot (I think)

* Important Information *

Installation : Do as usual, copy ALL the files in your DN3D directory, load
Setup
and select the map... You've done that a billion times before haven't
			 you ? :P If not, shame :P
Important Notes : Now THIS is important. One of the puzzles is rather hard -
it involves
an Overlord you have to face without guns. Of course you can always kick
him to death (doing so would lengthen the gameplay a bit :P) but
basically you have to trap him in the first part of the village.
Move him there and then find a way to finish that wall the inhabitants
			 started...

Next maps by me : AC4 altho I dont know anymore about this project tbh
I'm working on a map for William Gee's 'texture contest'
I'm the leader of CBP6 and I have a part in it (D+UH)
And I have some other projects waiting :P
And of course a lot of user maps :) I'm never outta ideas :)
